Welcome to Seol.Voyage
The word Seol, is the Irish word for sail, pronounced Showl. As that is what we are about to embark upon, a sailing voyage.
After a lifetime spent living on the edge - so to speak - in both business and exploration, it is time to put some thought into offsetting all that carbon! Using Jamie Young's experience of at least 100,000 miles at sea, this voyage is to be a proof of concept of carbon neutral sail trading. A growing phenomenon in various forms. Ireland as an island nation has the opportunity to join this expanding search of alternatives to hydrocarbons.
Historically, Ireland had much martime traffic along its western seaboard, from viking raiders, our famous pirate queen Grainne Mhaol, Armadas, etc. Even developing our own style of sailing boat known as the Galway Hooker, we have been a seafaring island for generations, it is time to resurect this tradition of sailing.
We are setting out to sail to the Azores, an island archipelago 2,200 kilometers away from Killary Harbour in the mid Atlantic, to buy organic tea and other goods and to explore other potential opportunities. We will then sail back with this cargo to trade. We aim to build on this exploratory voyage to establish further opportunities, as we all seek a net zero future. Once we have established some links in the Azores, more voyages will take place, not only to these islands but to other EU destinations. Other plans are afoot....

'Jamie Young is the Skipper and instigator of this project
Jamie is no stranger to adventure and expeditions, he led the first Irish kayak expedition to circumnavigate Cape Horn in South America and was a team member of the 1996 South Aris expedition which re-enacted Shackleton’s famous adventure in the Antarctic.
In 2012 Jamie helped to set up the Round Rockall Sailing Race and sailed the Killary Flyer single-handedly in the inaugural race.
In 2013, Jamie with a crew of kayakers, climbers, geologists, marine biologists, biodiversity experts and photographers, set off on a 10-week Killary Expedition to Greenland.
The team returned to Greenland on the Killary Flyer in June 2019, this time with a documentary filmmaker, to document the increasing effects of climate change on the traditional communities of Greenland.
This new adventure is based on Jamie's belief that we need to go backwards to move forward. Not in an old fashioned way, but to relearn to how harness the wind. Using materials that we already have at our disposal and science that we have not even thought about when applied to global transport / travel / trade. We aim to show that shipping is possible to be as near carbon neutral as possible.
This voyage to the Azores is an attempt of proof of concept. Showing possibilty of trade options to Ireland and the hope is to build on this experience and see where we can get to.
